Detroit Lions injury report: DE Ahmed Hassanein out indefinitely, could miss 2025 season

Detroit Lions injury report: Rookie defensive end Ahmed Hassanein could miss the whole 2025 season after suffering an injury.

Rookie defensive end Ahmed Hassanein is out indefinitely with a pectoral injury he suffered in last week's preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions coach said Dan Campbell said it's not clear yet if Hassanein has a chance to return this season.

"That’s a good question," Campbell said. "I don’t have that answer yet."

Hassanein, a sixth-round pick out of Boise State, was injured early in the third quarter Saturday when he was blocked to the ground on a running play.

Detroit Lions defensive end Ahmed Hassanein (61) practices during OTA at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Friday, May 30, 2025.

He clutched at his right chest as he laid on the ground before being tended to by trainers, and went straight to the locker room when he left the field.

Hassanein was expected to play a depth role this fall for a defensive line that already has dealt with its share of injuries.

Defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will miss the season after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a torn ACL, and Alim McNeill, Josh Paschal and Mekhi Wingo have yet to practice this summer and are expected to miss the start of the regular season with injuries.

"It’s tough when it’s a young guy because that’s – you build so much of what you are, your foundation over your first two years," Campbell said. "And so to lose half of camp – the good news is he got about half of camp. The bad news is he’s going to miss the rest of that. It’s tough. You wish they could be there. I know he does, too, but it is what it is. And the good news with that kid is he’s grinder. He’s going to do everything it takes, you already know that. He’s going to do everything it takes to heal up, to rehab, to be back."

Campbell offered injury updates on three other Lions before practice Monday:

Detroit Lions injury updates

  • The Lions activated cornerback Khalil Dorsey from the physically unable to perform list before practice. Dorsey has been out since breaking his leg last December. Campbell said Dorsey will do individual and group drills Monday with the hope that he can join team drills later in the week. Dorsey adds depth to a thin secondary and was one of the Lions' best special-teams players last year.
  • Safety Kerby Joseph remains out with knee soreness that Campbell described as minor. Joseph has not practiced in more than a week. "It's something he’s been dealing with a little bit so he won’t be out there today and we’re hoping to get him back late in the week," Campbell said. "That’s the hope right now. We don’t feel like it’s something, a major problem it’s just something we’re trying to manage right now and get it calmed down."
  • The Lions still have made no determination on whether safety Morice Norris will return this season after he was knocked unconscious and had to be taken off the field by ambulance in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Norris remains in concussion protocol, and Campbell said last week the team would re-evaluate Norris in 10 to 14 days. "That’s TBD right now," Campbell said of Norris' potential return this year. "We’re being very thorough with this and he’s doing well. I mean, he’s doing good right now but I don’t even want to go that far. I just know he’s down today and we’ll keep going."
