The Indiana Fever suffered a blowout loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night. With superstar point guard Caitlin Clark still sidelined with a groin injury, the Fever have been playing shorthanded. This has given increased opportunities to players like Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson, who despite the loss on Thursday have been integral to keeping Indiana in the WNBA playoff picture.

In fact, prior to their last two losses, the Fever had won five straight games. Despite their current two-game skid, the team remains fifth in the WNBA standings with a 17-14 record. This has them primed for a playoff spot.

Unfortunately, some devastating news surfaced on Friday. After both players left Thursday night’s game early, the Fever announced that both Colson and McDonald will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season.

"The Indiana Fever announced today that guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald will both miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering injuries during the team’s game at the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night," the team wrote in a press release.

Indiana added, "Colson sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee during the first quarter of the game, while McDonald suffered a broken bone in her right foot during the fourth quarter."

As the basketball world has been reacting to this heartbreaking news, Clark herself took to Instagram with a three-word message.

“Love you guys,” she wrote.

There is currently no timetable for Clark’s return, which for the time being leaves Indiana without a healthy point guard on the roster. The Fever will likely have to address this externally, but unfortunately they will not be permitted to make a trade, as the deadline has already come and gone.

For now, Indiana enters the weekend with a two-game lead on the final WNBA playoff spot. This is not a large cushion, meaning the Fever will have to find ways to win games with a significantly depleted roster.

Possible Indiana Fever Roster Option After Season-Ending Injuries

With the WNBA trade deadline passing, the Fever will have to look to the free agent market. There are a few guard options who could make sense, with one being former Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter. While she has a complicated history in the WNBA, and specifically with Clark, her offense could be something that elevates the team.

Whether it is Carter or another player, Indiana will need to do something to mitigate its current roster issues — and fast.
