Kings' Dennis Schroder Predicts Magic Forward as A Future NBA Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Last season, Franz Wagner had a well-rounded campaign, as he emerged as the clear second option for the Orlando Magic. For the first time in his career, he averaged at least 20 points. In his 60-game appearance, the German forward averaged 24.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists on 46.3% shooting.
In the playoffs, he played better, supporting his All-Star teammate Paolo Banchero. Wagner put up 25.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists through five games. Although the Magic was eliminated in the opening round by the Boston Celtics, it was a clear indication that the 23-year-old can be a star in the NBA.
His countryman, Dennis Schroder, can see the potential that he possesses.
Schroder Sees Wagner as a Future NBA Star
Schroder and Wagner are preparing for the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket tournament. Ahead of the international competition, the Sacramento Kings guard was interviewed by SPOX regarding the forward.
The point guard had an honest assessment of what the Magic forward can be in the NBA.
“He (Wagner) had a stretch where he scored 30 to 35 points, and won 11 games. So, this guy is built differently,” Schroder said.
Schroder said Wagner should've already been recognized as a star. But injuries last season prevented him from meeting the 65-game requirement to qualify for the NBA awards.
“He should have already become an All-Star this year but unfortunately got injured. He definitely would have made the All-NBA First Team.”
On the international stage, Wagner has started to make noise as one of the best young forwards. During the 2024 Paris Olympics, he helped Germany reach the gold medal game but unfortunately lost to Serbia.
The year before that, the 6-foot-10 forward was an integral piece to the national team winning gold in Manila at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Wagner earned a spot in the All-Second Team, together with the NBA's Jonas Valanciunas and Simone Fontecchio.
