Blue Jays trade idea lands $80 million 2-time All-Star closer

The Toronto Blue Jays could trade for an $80 million two-time All-Star closer.

The Toronto Blue Jays have been the story of the American League the last month, pulling away with the best record in the league.

Now, Toronto will be looking towards the Major League Baseball trade deadline to improve its roster for the last two months of the season.

One area the Blue Jays need to get better at is in the back of their bullpen, and they should be able to land a star closer this week.

Matthew Sookram from Fansided thinks the Blue Jays should try to trade for St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Hesley.

"Similar to 2023, the Blue Jays could look to St. Louis to help bolster their bullpen. At the higher end, there is Helsley, who is currently the closer for the Cardinals," Sookram wrote. "The 30-year-old has 41 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched, giving up just 12 earned runs in his 36 games. He'll be a free agent at the end of this season."

Hesley is a two-time All-Star with his last appearance coming in 2024, where he had a National League high of 49 saves.

Hesley is in the final year of his contract, and according to Spotrac, he has a six-year, $80 million contract value. So, Hesley will most likely only be part of the Blue Jays for the next two months, then enter free agency.
