Pair of Cardinals All-Stars linked to Blue Jays in trade proposal

Two of the hottest names on the trade market for the Red Birds could be on their way out of the States by Thursday.

Nolan Arenado Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals find themselves in a teeter-tottering position at this year's MLB trade deadline, do they buy or sell?

The team is still hanging on in the NL Wild Card race, but it's by a thread as currently sit fourth in the NL Central, 4.5 games out of the Wild Card and 9.5 behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.

And should the team turn to the selling side, there are two elite options they have that could get them a haul in third baseman Nolan Arenado and closer Ryan Helsley, and according to Shawn Childs of Fantasy Sports On SI, that could result in a package deal instead of individual trades that could send both of them to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The trade works out perfectly in both teams' favor, as the Blue Jays have needed a third baseman ever since Matt Chapman left for the San Francisco Giants, and with Helsley approached free agency, it would simply make more sense to include the flame-throwing closer in on the deal as well.

Childs' trade proposal would have the Blue Jays giving up starting pitcher Johnny King and second baseman Orelvis Martinez, both of whom have been stellar this season in the minor leagues.

As for the Cardinals, this trade would force them to either move Nolan Gorman to third base or to call up their own high-caliber prospect in J.J. Wetherholt, whom the team drafted with the seventh overall pick in last year's draft.
