With the 2025 MLB trade deadline a few days away, MLB Network's Jon Morosi revealed where the Cubs stand on trading their top prospects and named a starting pitcher the Cubs are interested in.

The Chicago Cubs recently signed a multi-year contract extension with president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer. Now, Hoyer has a few days before the 2025 MLB trade deadline to make the moves necessary to help the Cubs make a postseason run.
The Cubs will be in the market for starting pitching, bullpen help, and potentially a third baseman, even with current youngster Matt Shaw's recent success. Chicago also has loads of prospect talent they could bundle together in trades to get the pieces they need. However, who will the Cubs be willing to give up, and who might they target?
MLB Network's Jon Morosi joined 670 The Score Monday afternoon to discuss the Cubs' plans at the deadline, and where they stand on which prospects are available in trade talks.
"For the Cubs, they will try their best to keep Owen Caissie. I'm not sure if they can keep him while still getting someone that's controllable. But I do believe they would much rather move (Kevin) Alcantara than Casey, if they can help it, in the one they really like - (Jaxon) Wiggins, potential ace pitcher down the line - seems like they really want to keep him, but (James) Triantos can be in play," Morosi said. "Alcantara could be in play. And for the right controllable piece, Casey could be in play. But I do not see Casey being a guy for a Zac Gallen, for a Merrill Kelly, for a rental piece."
.@jonmorosi thinks the Cubs really want to keep Owen Caissie and move Kevin Alcantara and/or James Triantos if the dominoes fall right on the trade market.

Morosi named four of the Cubs' top 10 prospects, according to MLB.com. Caissie is Chicago's top prospect and has broken out at the Triple-A level in 2025. Wiggins is the Cubs' No. 5 prospect, but he's Chicago's top pitching prospect.
Alcantara and Triantos are the Cubs' No. 4 and No. 10 prospects, respectively, and the ones Morosi believes the Cubs are most likely to offer for rental pieces at the deadline. Alcantara is an outfield prospect behind Caissie, and Triantos can play outfield and second base.
The Cubs will likely only shop Cassie and Wiggins at the deadline for pitchers with multiple years of control, but Alcantara and Triantos could be prospects the Cubs are willing to trade for rental pitchers in 2025.
Morosi also gave a young National League pitcher the Cubs could be very interested in, who's under team control through 2028.
"The guy whose name I think we haven't talked about enough, broadly speaking - Edward Cabrera, Miami Marlins. Take a look at his highlights," Morosi said. "He has, I think, one of the best arms in the game period, and he has been a very popular name alongside Sandy Alcantara for the Miami Marlins."
Cabrera has put together a very strong 2025 campaign, pitching to a 3.48 ERA across 88 innings with 92 strikeouts. The Marlins' right-hander is only 27 years old and has electric stuff.
The starting pitching market will be very competitive, so the Cubs may have to pay extra to get the pitcher they want, but Chicago has the prospects to do it. It will come down to how much they're willing to give away to get the guys they want at the deadline.
