Monaco’s Sébastien Pocognoli says he ‘accepts the pressure’ ahead of Real Madrid tie

Tuesday night will be a meeting of two clubs in crisis. AS Monaco are on a historically bad run of seven defeats in their last eight games in Ligue 1, whilst Real Madrid recently changed manager, bringing in Álvaro Arbeloa to replace Xabi Alonso.

Like Arbeloa, Pocognoli is new in the job, but not as new as his Spanish counterpart. The Belgian arrived in October, replacing Adi Hutter, but there has not been a discernible uptick in form, certainly not in the league, where there has been clear regression.

Speaking at a press conference attended by Get French Football News, Pocognoli addressed the mounting pressure. “I accept it. I have no problem with that,” began the former Union Saint-Gilloise manager.

“It is the manager’s job to assume [the pressure], to protect the players […] but I happily take the pressure,” he added. Pocognoli added that his side “often turn up for the big occasions.” He will be hoping that is the case in tomorrow night’s crunch UEFA Champions League clash at the Bernabéu.
