Mané’s influence beyond the final goal

Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly highlighted Sadio Mané’s long term impact following the Teranga Lions 1 - 0 extra time win over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Mané played decisive role throughout the tournament and was rewarded with the Player of the Tournament award for second time in his career. His first came in 2021 when Senegal lifted their maiden AFCON title after beating Egypt on penalties.

“The journey was harder than it looked”

Speaking after the final Koulibaly admitted the match against Morocco tested the squad under unique conditions. He explained that focus and mental strength were decisive factors in overcoming well organised host nation.

According to the Al Hilal defender Senegal’s campaign was built on humility and preparation from the opening game. He noted that every player entered matches fully concentrated, a mindset that proved crucial in the knockout stages.

Why Mané was given the honour

Koulibaly also addressed the moment that caught attention during the trophy ceremony when Mané was handed the captain’s armband to lift the cup. He insisted the decision was obvious and deeply symbolic.

“Mané has carried the history of our national team on his shoulders” Koulibaly said. “What he has given to Senegal goes far beyond goals. He is leader inside and outside the dressing room”

While celebrating the second AFCON title in Senegal’s history, Koulibaly warned against complacency. He stressed the need to maintain the same work ethic with new challenges approaching at international level.

The centre back ended his media appearance on lighter note when asked about his return to club duty. Smiling, he joked that Al Hilal might not need him immediately pointing to their strong form and lead in the Saudi Pro League.
