Packers elevate practice squad WR, what it means for the injury report

WR Isaiah Neyor was brought up to the game day roster after Dontayvion Wicks was ruled out with a concussion.

The Green Bay Packers ruled out receiver Dontayvion Wicks (concussion) on Friday, after previously placing receiver Savion Williams and receiver-cornerback Bo Melton on the injured reserve over the past couple of weeks. These injuries led to the Packers moving up Jakobie Keeney-James up to the 53-man roster, from the practice squad, last week. Now, Keeney-James will be joined by Isaiah Neyor, who the Packers announced will be elevated from the practice squad to the gameday roster on Saturday.

With the addition of Neyor, Green Bay will have six receivers available to them against the Chicago Bears: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed (slot only), Matthew Golden, Keeney-James and now Neyor.

Beyond Wicks, other injuries we’re monitoring are the five players who are currently listed as questionable tonight: QB Malik Willis (shoulder/hamstring), RT Zach Tom (back/knee), DT Warren Brinson (foot) LB Nick Niemann (pectoral) and S Javon Bullard (knee). Packers head coach Matt LaFleur previously said that both Willis and Tom are expected to play this week, but since then, Tom was a non-participant in Thursday’s practice for a “rest day.”

For the most part, I expect these questionable players to suit up against the Bears, especially since the Packers didn’t call up practice squad linebacker Jamon Johnson or a defensive lineman to the gameday roster. If Brinson couldn’t play, Green Bay wouldn’t have a backup three-technique undertackle behind starter Karl Brooks for this game. With the way special teams is played, you need five linebackers to suit up, too, so an elevation of Johnson would have been the canary in the coal mine that Niemann is trending toward being out. Take those non-moves as good signs.

An interesting thing here, though, is that the Packers will go into this game with just two tight ends on the roster, Luke Musgrave and Josh Whyle, since the team didn’t bring up Drake Dabney, a practice squadder who has been brought up to the gameday roster for the last two weeks. The third tight end will be backup offensive lineman Darian Kinnard, who has seen time at tight end post-Tucker Kraft injury.

Kinnard would have been the next man up off the bench for Green Bay if Tom were out and Jordan Morgan served as Tom’s replacement starter. If Tom weren’t going to play, the team probably would have made a move at tight end.

90 minutes before kickoff, the Packers will announce their official 48-man gameday roster, from a list of 54 potential players (the 53-man roster and Neyor). One of the six inactives we already know, as Wicks is ruled out, but the other five are still up in the air.
