Sons of German Tour de France winner Ullrich compete in cyclocross

Germany's only Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich was a proud father on Sunday when he watched two of his sons compete at the national cyclocross championships. Toni Ullrich placed 14th in the under-15 race in wintery conditions in Bensheim while Benno Ullrich had to abandon the U17 race after a fall.

Germany's only Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich was a proud father on Sunday when he watched two of his sons compete at the national cyclocross championships.

Toni Ullrich placed 14th in the under-15 race in wintery conditions in Bensheim while Benno Ullrich had to abandon the U17 race after a fall.

"They did well. Of course I am proud as a father," Jan Ullrich tpld broadcasters Hessischer Rundfunk. "The boys definitely had fun.

"I also competed in cyclocross 35 years ago right to the world championships, a fifth place. And now my sons are competing. I have passed ther baton on."

Ullrich won the Tour in 1997, the Vuelta a Espana in 1999 and Olympic road race gold in 2000. His career ended in 2006 amid the doping affair around Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes. Ullrich admitted to substance abuse many years later.
