Football: Louisiana Tech safety Jacob Fields signs with TCU

The Horned Frogs make their first big splash on defense this offseason.

The TCU Horned Frogs will have a major void to fill at the safety position, where sixth-year safety and three-time All-Big 12 honoree Bud Clark will depart after earning Second Team All-Big 12 honors in 2025. Reinforcements are on the way, however, as the Horned Frogs have reportedly signed Louisiana Tech transfer safety Jacob Fields, who has been coached by former TCU defensive back and All-Big 12 winner Sam Carter, currently the safeties coach for the Bulldogs. Fields, who was named Conference USA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year this season, finished with 92 total tackles, 50 solo tackles, three interceptions, 2.5 tackles for loss and five pass breakups.

Jeremy Clark of 247Sports was the first to report the news on Fields signing with TCU. It’s the first major defensive splash in the transfer portal for the Horned Frogs, who are returning All-Big 12 safety Jamel Johnson as well as nickelback Kylin Jackson. Fields, who has played in 36 games over three seasons at Louisiana Tech, originally played on offense before switching to safety. In 2023, Fields had 26 rushes for 105 yards and two touchdowns along with 12 catches for 97 yards over an 11-game span. In 2024, Fields had 54 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups, one fumble recovery and two interceptions at defensive back.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder from Melissa, Texas is a junior who will arrive in Fort Worth with one year of eligibility remaining. A three-star recruit out of high school, Fields held offers from North Texas, Texas State, UTSA, Army, Air Force and more before signing with Louisiana Tech, who’s currently coached by former TCU assistant Sonny Cumbie.
