A college football head coach's impassioned rant about the state of the transfer portal is going viral on social media.
The NCAA's transfer portal has been around for several years now. Players used to have to sit out for a year if they transferred schools, unless they got a waiver from the NCAA. Now, it's essentially the Wild West, with thousands of players changing schools every offseason. Players should have the right to move on from a school and play right away, like coaches do, but something probably has to change moving forward, right?
Whether it's multi-year contracts or buyouts or stricter transfer windows, something has to change in the transfer portal world.
This week, Northern Illinois coach Thomas Hammock ranted against the state of the transfer portal. His rant is must watch.
Hammock had an impassioned rant against the state of the transfer portal today, saying it's ultimately not benefiting that many kids. Student-athletes are bailing on good opportunities early, bypassing hard work and more.
The head coach, a former student athlete, said that the lessons he learned in college were far more valuable than a quick payday. He wouldn't trade his experience for the world, even if he theoretically would have left money on the table.
“I would do it again for free — *for free.* Because of the things I learned. That’s why I’m standing here today: because of what I learned in college. Not because of how much somebody gave me," he ranted.

The college sports world is loving the impassioned rant from the veteran college football head coach.
"Spitting 100% facts… the only things being learned from this NIL/Portal generation is that it’s ok to break commitments and chase money… that’s not the real world. The select blessed souls that make it to the NFL every year might eventually attain generational wealth, but what I want to really know is how many guys who bounced from place to place made it pro & how many are truly achieving success," one fan wrote.
"I get it and course it’s about the education. I definitely believe we’ve lost sight of that. However, let’s not act like two things can’t be true or matter," one fan added.
"I wanna say I hope he gets to a bigger program so he could get a bigger contract to educate more young men, but he’s seems happy with his life so I’m happy for him," one fan added.
