In 2023, Travis Kelcewent on his New Heights podcast and said he went to a Taylor Swift concert with a friendship bracelet. It had his phone number, and he hoped to gift it to the pop star and ask her on a date.

The Kansas City Chiefs star didn’t get to meet her, and he shared the story in detail on the show alongside his brother, Jason. Swift saw it, though, and she recalled what went through her head as she watched.

In her podcast debut Wednesday night, Swift appeared on New Heights and looked back on Kelce’s desire to meet her. She also said she still hasn’t seen the original friendship bracelets he brought with him to Arrowhead Stadium that night, though she saw the response to the events of the night.

“He threw a man-tantrum,” Swift said. “It’s so funny. … It was such a wild, romantic gesture to just be like, ‘I want to date you!’ At first when I looked at it, I was like, ‘This dude didn’t get a meet-and-greet and he’s making it everyone’s problem.’ That’s what I thought at first. You realize, he didn’t even reach out to our management. When this podcast came out, I was like, did he ever reach out to be in the tents or did we know he was in the building?

“He came with Pat [Mahomes], and he thought that because he knows the elevator lady, that he could talk to her about getting down to my dressing room. … That’s how it works in 1973. But yeah, he really just was like, ‘I know a guy. I can figure this out.'”

Taylor Swift: This felt like an ’80s John Hughes movie

Of course, it all worked out for Travis Kelce. He started dating Taylor Swift that summer, and they’re approaching their two-year anniversary. She’s a constant presence at Chiefs games in a suite with Kelce’s family and has been with the franchise throughout the last two seasons.

It all started with that podcast episode in 2023. If it seems like something out of a 1980s rom-com, that’s because Swift saw it as a modern-day telling of Say Anything when Lloyd Dobler stands out Diane Court’s window with a boombox playing “In Your Eyes.”

“I actually, when I thought about it, I was like, we live in a day and age where – I’m not an online person at all,” Swift said. “I’m not on social media like that, I’m genuinely terrified to open my DMs. There’s smoke coming out of my DMs. I don’t want to go anywhere near that. I don’t know what’s in there. … This kind of felt more like, I was in an ’80s John Hughes movie and he was just standing outside my window with a boombox just being like, ‘I want to date you. Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you friendship bracelets. Do you want to date me?’

“… I was like, if this guy isn’t crazy – which is a big if – this is sort of what I’ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager. … It was wild, but it worked. I’m glad it worked.”

As for the role New Heights played in the relationship, Taylor Swift joked that’s the reason she went on the show Wednesday night as more than 1 million people tuned in to watch. It’s her way of repaying a very big favor.

“This podcast has done a lot for me,” Swift said. “I owe a lot to this podcast. This podcast got me a boyfriend – ever since Travis decided to use it as his personal dating app about two years ago.”
