Dallas could soon have another star on the global stage.
Mavericks' young star tabbed as potential option for Team USA in 2028 Olympics originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Dallas Mavericks know they have a star in the making, and it might not take long for the rest of the world to find out.
The past several months have been a roller coaster in Dallas. From trading Luka Doncic to missing the playoffs to drafting Cooper Flagg with the first pick, there has been nothing dull about the Mavericks in 2025.
With the 2025-26 schedule release on the horizon, next season is inching closer, which also means the highly anticipated debut of Cooper Flagg. Considering Flagg’s expected star power, the NBA has already announced his NBA debut will come on Oct. 22 when the Mavericks host Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
While Flagg and Wembanyama are sure to have a Texas-sized rivalry in the years to come, it could also come to a perfect climax in Los Angeles in 2028. In a recent CBS Sports article picking young players who could make the next USA Olympic team, Adam Finkelstein tabbed Flagg as one of the likeliest young inclusions.
Coming behind only Paolo Banchero, Flagg’s anticipated stardom could help him jump into the conversation for a gold medal by the time 2028 comes around. Noting Flagg’s versatility in his one year at Duke, Finkelstein explained that Flagg could be a perfect fit for the next Team USA squad in the Olympics.
Giving the team plenty of flexibility at various potential positions, Flagg’s athleticism is also sure to play a key role in his chances of making the team. While he still has his first three NBA seasons to get through before a potential Olympics debut, it’s no secret that Team USA must be excited about the prospect of having a young American superstar blossom in front of them.
