Some interesting tidbits on the recent AP Preseason Poll

The Texas Longhorns were recently voted No. 1 in the AP Poll for the first time in school history. This follows the recent No. 1 ranking in the Coaches Poll, which was also another school first. Things are trending the right direction for Texas. Though it was by a razor thin margin that Texas earned the No.1 rank ahead of Penn State.

When breaking down the votes, Texas and Penn State are by far the media favorites. The difference between the two is only five points, and when you consider that five points makes up 0.32% of Texas’ total 1552 points, razor thin is not embellishment.

Voters are fairly indecisive on Ohio State, at least as far as placement. The same can be said about Georgia and Clemson, both are the only teams in the top five that show up in 10 different spots. All of these teams have at least one first-place vote. Oregon has one as well.

The Bulldogs having a single vote is a potential sign that Georgia under Kirby Smart is losing some of its luster in the eyes of voters. But maybe that’s to Smart’s advantage. Smart has been notorious for getting his teams that were ranked No. 1 and consistent favorites in every game to actually believe they were underdogs. He will no longer have to convince them this year considering Georgia enters at No. 5 with just one first-place vote from On3’s Brett McMurphy.

Last year Texas failed to receive a preseason first-place vote, with the majority pollsters putting the Longhorns at No. 4. Oddly enough, the 2025 preseason poll has more votes for Texas at No. 6 than the 2024 poll did. Both No. 6 rankings come from voters new to the AP Poll in 2025.

The preseason hype for Texas is no longer just on the 40 Acres, the Longhorns are a nationally hyped team labeled by many as the best in America to start the 2025 season.

Now Texas for the first time in school history will have to defend that assertation starting week one.
