One of the most polarizing figures in high school football is back in the spotlight. According to a report by The Gadsden Times, Rush Propst has been named the interim head coach at Coosa Christian (Ala.) following the suspension of lead man Mark O’Bryant.
Propst takes over a Conquerors program that went 9-1 in 2024 before being banned from the Class 1A playoffs and forced to forfeit five games due to use of an ineligible player. Coosa Christian was a state finalist in 1A the year before.
Perhaps best known for his run at Hoover (Ala.) where he won five state championships from 1999-2007, Propst has also led programs at Colquitt County (Ga.), Valdosta (Ga.) and Pell City (Ala.).
The spotlight and oftentimes controversy followed Propst.
MTV filmed a documentary series, Two-A-Days, showcasing Hoover’s 2005 and 2006 seasons. Propst stepped down as the Buccaneers’ head coach in 2007 after the program had to forfeit multiple games due to after its use of an ineligible player came to light.
In 2015, while leading Colquitt County in a playoff game, Propst headbutted a player and was initially suspended for the entire 2016 season before it was revered on appeal.
Propst’s next head coaching job was at Pell City, where he led the program for one season, going 1-10.
“It has never been my desire to cause controversy or division in this community. I believe Pell City’s brightest days are ahead of it but I’ve concluded that I am not the right person to lead this program at this time,” Propst said via a statement he released on social media in May 2024.
Propst is 296-117 as a high school head football coach with seven state championships.

Coosa Christian is a private school located in Gadsden, Ala.
The Conquerors football team was has won nine or more games in each of the last three seasons, an impressive turnaround after posting three-consecutive losing seasons from 2019-22.
Rising sophomore cornerback Kylen Johnson is the most prominent college prospect on the team’s roster. The 5-foot-10 standout has already received an offer from FCS North Alabama.
