Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will be the first to say that scoring goals truly takes a village, and when it comes to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, it’s a feat that he couldn’t reach alone.
That said, Ovechkin made sure to return the favor when he scored his 895th career goal against the New York Islanders on April 6 to overtake Gretzky.
“I can say I'm very proud. I'm really proud for myself. I'm really proud for my family, for all my teammates that help me to reach that milestone and for all my coaches,” Ovechkin said after passing No. 99. “It's huge. It's unbelievable. It's unbelievable moment and I'm happy."
The 39-year-old gifted his teammates, the coaches and rest of the organizational staff with custom Hublot watches commemorating his record.
“They had his photo and ‘greatest goal scorer ever’ engraved,” Alex Alexeyev told RG. “He gave them to everyone - trainers, equipment guys, everyone,” Alexeyev said.
