Atlanta Dream center Brittney Griner is one of the most individually accomplished active WNBA players. In her 12th season, the 34-year-old is averaging 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. Currently sidelined with a neck injury, Griner was ruled out for Thursday night's game against the Chicago Sky — however, that did not stop her team from picking up a big win.
Defeating Chicago on the road, Atlanta moved to 19-11 on the season. This is good for the third-best record in the WNBA, and second-best in the Eastern Conference. Playoff bound for the third straight season, Atlanta will be looking for its first championship in franchise history.
In order to reach their ultimate goal, the Dream will need a healthy Griner. The two-time scoring champion won a title with the Phoenix Mercury in 2014, and has 47 games of postseason experience.
Brittney Griner Had WNBA Fan Holding Back Tears on Thursday
While she is currently out with an injury, Griner's presence is still felt by her teammates and fans. That was on display prior to Thursday's game.
Engaging with the fans pregame, Griner signed memorabilia and took pictures. One particular exchange was shared by the Dream on social media, showing a fan holding back tears while interacting with Griner.
Comments have been pouring in from other fans who appreciated this wholesome exchange. Among those to share a reaction was the Dream star's wife, Cherelle Griner.
"Why am I crying 🥹," she wrote.
Brittney and Cherelle Griner have been married since 2019 (h/t People). The couple shares a lot of their relationship on social media, with Cherelle having over 174,000 followers. Meeting in college, the two have known each other for more than a decade despite being married for just six of those years.
Brittney Griner Has Large Fanbase and Hall of Fame Resume
As was on display before Thursday night's game, Griner has a passionate fanbase. The 6-foot-9 center has an extensive list of WNBA accomplishments that have helped her become one of the league's most-known players. The resume speaks for itself:
- 10-time WNBA All-Star
- 8-time WNBA Blocks Leader
- 7-time WNBA All-Defensive Team
- 6-time All-WNBA Team
- 2-time WNBA Scoring Champion
- 2-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year
- WNBA Champion
- WNBA All-Rookie Team
- WNBA 25th Anniversary Team
Looking to add more individual and team hardware this season, Griner has the chance to do that with the Dream.
