In February, Rob Ryan met with reporters for the first time as USC’s linebackers coach. He made quite the impression, offering high praise for defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn and recalling his unique relationship with quarterback Jayden Maiava’s family.
The clips quickly went viral on social media. But USC safety Kamari Ramsey said it’s exactly how Ryan is around the facility.
Ramsey praised the energy Ryan brings to the program as he goes through his first training camp on the staff. Even players outside the linebacker room get to know the longtime NFL assistant, and he makes his presence known everywhere he goes.
“I think if you are a part of the USC staff, you’re a player, if you’re just in the building, I think everybody in the building interacts with Coach Rob,” Ramsey recently told On3 via Zoom. “He’s high-energy, a lot of knowledge. It’s been great to learn from him. It’s something new every day.
“He has a great personality. He brings a lot of energy. If he’s in the room, you know he’s in the room. It’s been great to learn from him.”
Kamari Ramsey on Rob Ryan: ‘You just have to be there’
Ryan’s introductory press conference announced his presence at USC. In addition to Lynn and Maiava, he also mentioned the “little JUCO kid from Hutch” – referring to running back Waymond Jordan, who’s generating plenty of buzz this offseason after arriving in Los Angeles.
“We’re gonna go against the best? Oh, good. Bring it on,” Ryan said that day. “Let’s see. I can’t wait to see that little JUCO kid from Hutch – bam, we’re gonna get after you. But anyway, it’ll be great. We’re excited.”
It’s that level of energy that has Kamari Ramsey and the rest of the Trojans buzzing about their new assistant coach. As for how he’d describe things on a day-to-day basis, he said it’s not easy to do so. But Ryan is still proving to be a strong addition to Lincoln Riley’s staff.
“You just have to be there,” Ramsey said. “It’s every day, too. It never changes. Same guy every day, same energy every day. I’m glad he’s coaching us.
“He’s been a great addition to our program. You just have to be there to see it, but it’s the same thing every day.”
USC is in its second week of training camp as the 2025 season quickly approaches. The Trojans will kick things off against FBS newcomer Missouri State in Week 1.
