Newcastle United find themselves in a defining moment of the transfer window as their search for a reliable center-back continues and Marc Guehi has returned to the top of their list.
The Magpies have endured a frustrating summer, missing out on targets like Yoane Wissa, James Trafford, Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike, now manager Eddie Howe is determined to finally secure a defender who can stabilize his backline.
Last summer, Newcastle made three bids for Guehi but Crystal Palace held firm at £70m [$93m], and the 25‑year‑old stayed to lead his team to an FA Cupwin during the 2024/25 season.
According to The Times, Newcastle are prepared to revive their pursuit of the England international but they are only willing to spend £40m [$53m].
Crystal Palace want £50m [$66m], even though Guehi has just 12 months left on his contract. Liverpool have also shown interest, although the Premier League champions are unwilling to meet the same price.
The report suggests Newcastle “could leave it late in the transfer window” as they try to force Palace closer to their valuation.

Newcastle United manager to solve Isak issue before launching full Guehi push
Before turning completely toward Guehi, Eddie Howe will meet Alexander Isak for what The report described as “crisis talks” on 4th August [Today].
The Swedish striker has expressed his desire to leave and Newcastle are attempting to finalize the signing of RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, which could open the door for Isak’s departure.
The Magpies have already added Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, and Antonito Cordero this summer.
Coming back to Guehi, if Crystal Palace do not reduce their asking price, Newcastle could wait until later in the window, believing that his expiring contract could eventually force a compromise while Liverpool are expected to monitor the situation.
