The Boston Red Sox could use a boost as they try to secure a Wild Card spot.
Red Sox Miss Out on Season-Ending Injury Replacement Before Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Boston Red Sox made a rebuilding-type move when they traded star slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on June 15, but they've played like a contender ever since. They're 22-15 after the deal, and now own the AL's second Wild Card spot after previously being out of playoff positioning.
Fellow star Alex Bregman's return from injury has helped. The 31-year-old is slashing .292/.306/.542 with three homers and nine RBI in July after missing June entirely. Meanwhile, Boston's pitching is also pulling its weight. Ace Garrett Crochet leads MLB with 175 strikeouts and is third with a 2.23 ERA. The team is also tied for eighth with a 3.76 ERA.
However, the Red Sox still have a hole at first base with Triston Casas (knee) out for the season. Veteran Romy Gonzalez is slashing .295/.337/.548, but he's only played 53 games. Additionally, fellow veteran Abraham Toro is slashing .221/.295/.279 in July.
Boston missed out on a high-end Trade Deadline option, via The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
"The Boston Red Sox were in the mix for Eugenio Suárez, with the intention of acquiring him to play first base, sources tell me and The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey," he reported.
The Seattle Mariners agreed to acquire Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks just after midnight on Thursday. The slugger is fifth in baseball with 36 homers, tied for first with 87 RBI, and ninth with an .897 OPS.

Boston has until 6 p.m. EST on Thursday to land someone else at the position. So far, the club's only move was getting southpaw pitcher Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league infielder Blaze Jordan.
The Red Sox' next game is against the Houston Astros on Friday night.
