Bleacher Report named the Los Angeles Dodgers trade for a former Washington Nationals outfielder as one of the deadline’s most underrated pickups.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have several contenders in the National League who are serious threats to their 2025 title defense. The Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Mets are all legit World Series contenders, and their success basically assured that Los Angeles could not simply stand pat at the trade deadline.
In addition, the San Diego Padres are red-hot, having won six straight games, and now just sit three games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The front office ultimately made a few savvy moves over the deadline, including addressing the team’s thin outfield depth.
That issue has seemingly been resolved after Los Angeles trade for Washington Nationals right fielder Alex Call. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter listed this deal as one of the seven sneaky good moves this deadline, giving several reasons why Call is such a good fit.
“Call quietly excelled in a part-time role with the Nationals last season, hitting .343/.425/.525 for a 169 OPS+ over 113 plate appearances, and he is having another productive season as a role player,” Reuter notes.
“The 30-year-old is batting .314/.359/.443 in 81 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this year, but it's not out of the question to think he could carve out a bigger role with a hot start in Los Angeles and siphon off some playing time from Michael Conforto.”
With the struggles that Conforto has had throughout 2025, there’s a chance that Call becomes a key piece of this roster heading into October. The Dodgers had to give up two pitching prospects in return for Alex, so, especially for a team trying to win now, there’s minimal risk linked to this transaction.
