The San Diego Padres are making a strong push for the postseason and made a splash early Thursday morning acquiring closing pitcher Mason Miller from the Athletics.
Miller has spent three seasons with the A’s, and earned his first All-Star selection along with a fourth-place finish in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2024. The 26-year-old flamethrower has continued his dominance in 2025, pitching to a 3.76 ERA and notching 20 saves over 38 appearances.
San Diego’s bullpen ranks among the best in baseball, and a large reason is their current closer, Robert Suarez. The right-hander leads MLB in saves with 31 and has a 3.43 ERA across 47 outings, regularly shutting down threats late in games.
With Miller set to join San Diego’s bullpen, the Padres made a decision on Suarez’s future with the organization.
A trade report surfaced that they have no intention of moving Suarez despite acquiring Miller and that they are content with keeping the bullpen at an elite status.

They also may keep starter Dylan Cease, after all, with J.P. Sears giving them plenty of depth.
Once again, the Padres are all-in.
The Padres have been linked to multiple All-Star outfielders, such as Steven Kwan of the Guardians and Jarren Duran of the Red Sox, but with their farm system now depleted following the Miller deal, Suarez’s name surfaced in trade rumors as a valuable trade assett.
Suarez has spent four seasons with the Padres and made his second consecutive All-Star appearance in 2025. Over 183 regular-season appearances, he owns a 3.02 ERA, 21-11 record and 67 saves.
The trade deadline is set to end on Thursday at 6:00 PM EST, and general manager A.J. Preller is known for swinging for the fences at the deadline and has doubled down on forming an unstoppable bullpen for the playoffs.
San Diego will enter a series on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 60-49 mark, three games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
