The Houston Astros received unfortunate news that offseason acquisition Isaac Paredes will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his hamstring.

They responded on Thursday by acquiring former franchise superstar Carlos Correa from the Minnesota Twins in a blockbuster trade just hours before the MLB trade deadline.

Correa has spent the past four seasons in Minnesota, but fully established himself as a star with Houston, where he debuted in 2015.

The 30-year-old shortstop played 752 games for the Astros after being selected first overall in the 2012 MLB Draft, accumulating 781 hits, 133 home runs and 489 RBIs. He won Rookie of the Year, earned two All-Star appearances and claimed a Gold Glove Award during his seven-year tenure in Houston.

The Astros currently have Jeremy Pena at shortstop—the 2022 World Series MVP and Gold Glove Award winner under contract through 2027—and, although he is sidelined with a fractured rib, he is set to return from his rehab assignment this week. However, Correa announced immediately after the deal was official that he will shift to third base.

"Carlos Correa informed the Astros that he would welcome playing third base with Pena remaining at shortstop."

Correa has endured a disappointing 2025 campaign, posting a .267 batting average, .704 OPS, seven home runs and 31 RBIs. The Astros are hoping a change of scenery can reignite his bat, especially given his prior success with the organization.

Houston will control Correa for three more seasons, as his contract runs through 2028. Astros fans will eagerly await Correa’s home debut at Daikin Park this weekend.
