Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is a restricted NBA free agent.
Jonathan Kuminga Makes Personal Decision After $45 Million Warriors Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Jonathan Kuminga contract saga continues to drag deep into the offseason, with little progress toward a resolution. The Golden State Warriors have offered the restricted free agent a two-year, $45 million deal, but Kuminga has rejected it due to the team option in the second year and the removal of a built-in no-trade clause, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Warriors insider Anthony Slater.
Kuminga is reportedly seeking more security and flexibility, preferring a player-friendly contract that allows greater control over his future. The Warriors, however, have remained firm in their stance, unwilling to meet those terms and instead proposing a deal that limits Kuminga’s leverage.
Additionally, ESPN revealed Golden State recently renewed efforts to retain Kuminga, but the forward once again declined. The new report also mentioned that Kuminga continues to evaluate interest from other teams, including the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, who are said to be pursuing him with proposals up to four years approaching $90 million total, including a player option for the final season.
Following the news, Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard took to his X account to sound a warning about possible outcomes if the stalemate continues. He said the situation is “possibly limping toward Kuminga accepting the $7.9 million qualifying offer,” a scenario neither side wants.

Jonathan Kuminga's Offseason Plans Have Changed
Amid this uncertainty about his future, Kuminga has changed his offseason plans. NBA insider Marc Stein revealed the latest on that in a report Wednesday morning.
"Jonathan Kuminga was on the Democratic Republic of Congo’s preliminary roster for @AfroBasket in Angola, which starts Aug. 12, but I’m told Kuminga is not expected to play for his national team due to his ongoing restricted free agency stalemate with Golden State," Stein reported.

For now, Kuminga’s future with the Warriors appears more complication than ever. Tensions between Kuminga and head coach Steve Kerr were noted last season, with reports of friction stemming from Kuminga’s playoff benching and struggles to adapt to the Warriors’ team-oriented system.
It was said that at times, he reportedly ignored directions from Kerr and Stephen Curry, raising questions about his maturity and fit. Although Kerr has publicly praised Kuminga’s talent, he has also expressed concerns about his ability to thrive in a complementary role.
Kuminga is coming off a season in which he averaged 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. But despite reported interest, no serious trade offers have materialized. Both sides remain at a standstill—with the Warriors unable to fully shape their roster and Kuminga holding firm for a deal that better fits his long-term goals.
