Jamel Dean says the current roster will outperform the Super Bowl LV championship team.
On Thursday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean, speaking to the media about team dynamics, expressed confidence that the current roster will outperform the Super Bowl LV championship team.
"I always think back to that year and think about the team we had and compare it to this team," Dean said. "[They are] very similar, but I think we are better than the team that won the Super Bowl. The camaraderie and how we all plan together -- everyone has this grit to them where we just want to keep competing and help each other get better."
Last season, Dean and the Bucs faced scrutiny following a challenging pass defense performance. So, in the offseason, they focused on strengthening their defensive core, particularly the secondary, by adding promising young talent such as second-round rookie cornerback Benjamin Morrison.
Matching the achievements of the 2020 team will hinge on how well the current roster maintains its performance throughout the season. In 2024, the team stumbled midseason, but rebounded late in the season by winning six of their final seven games.
Avoiding a midseason slump in the upcoming campaign will be crucial for Todd Bowles and Co. to secure a smooth path into the postseason.
The current roster faces a tough road ahead if it hopes to equal or exceed the success of the Super Bowl LV team.
The 2020 squad was the first team to play and win a Super Bowl in their home stadium, defeating the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs 31-9. The championship squad relied heavily on veteran quarterback Tom Brady, who earned his fifth Super Bowl MVP award, and a defense anchored by linebacker Devin White.
