Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga remains a restricted free agent late in July.
Warriors’ $40 Million Jonathan Kuminga Decision Surfaces After Suns Trade Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Roughly one month into the beginning of free agency, Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga remains on the market as a restricted free agent. There is still plenty of time until the start of next season, but it is interesting that the 22-year-old still needs to find a home for the 2025-26 campaign.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that the Phoenix Suns are interested in acquiring Kuminga via a sign-and-trade with the Warriors (h/t Jake Fischer of The Stein Line). Fischer did report that, while a trade would be difficult for Phoenix to complete, their interest in him is nothing new.
"Sources say Phoenix, meanwhile, is the latest team to express exploratory interest in a Kuminga sign-and-trade … challenging as it would be for the Suns to make such a deal happen," Fischer wrote. "Fresh off completing a buyout of Bradley Beal this week... they have contacted both Kuminga's representation and the Warriors to make their fondness for the bouncy swingman known."
"The Suns, to be clear, do not appear to possess the sort of draft capital or players that Golden State is believed to be seeking in exchange for Kuminga.
Yet he certainly did come up in trade talks between the teams during the season, sources say, when the Warriors were pursuing the re-acquisition of Kevin Durant."
On Tuesday, a new report surfaced regarding Golden State's best offer to Kuminga in free agency that might also impact the Suns.
Kuminga has shown flashes throughout his time in Golden State so far. However, it does not seem that the team is willing to go all in to bring him back.
According to the latest reports, the Warriors' best offer to the forward is a deal worth $40 million across two years (h/t Marc Stein of The Stein Line).
"Word is that the Warriors' best offers to Kuminga have topped out in the two-year $40 million range. Kuminga's camp has continued to seek out sign-and-trade opportunities, with Sacramento and Phoenix still regarded as the most determined suitors, but Golden State is said to want a first-round pick in any sign-and-trade deal. The Suns do not have an available first-round pick to offer," Stein wrote.
Like Fischer, Stein also reported that the Suns still have interest in Kuminga, though they may not have the assets to make a deal happen.
As it stands, Kuminga's next destination is still up in the air. He could return to Golden State, but Phoenix also seems like a legitimate possibility. With the offseason still relatively young, this will be a story to monitor for the rest of the summer.
