The Chicago Cubs are at the top of the NL, but they're not satisfied.
Cubs Named in Trade Report for $45 Million Pitcher originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Chicago Cubs are not only in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020, but they have as good a chance as any team to win it all. Players like second baseman Nico Hoerner, right fielder Kyle Tucker, center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, and starting pitcher Matthew Boyd have helped them reach the top of the NL standings with two months left in the regular season.
Chicago is tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL's first seed, and will face them on the road on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Both teams are one game ahead of the New York Mets, 1.5 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and two games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Cubs can't afford to be complacent with such tight margins, which is why they're eyeing help as Thursday's Trade Deadline approaches, via KPRC2's Ari Alexander.
"I keep hearing the Cubs linked to many different pitchers," he reported on Sunday. "Kyle Finnegan, Edward Cabrera and Seth Lugo are three that I’ve been told the Cubs have showed interest in."
Lugo (7-5, 2.95 ERA) is 19th in baseball in ERA and 18th with a 1.09 WHIP. The 35-year-old has a player option next season, the last one on his three-year, $45 million deal with the Kansas City Royals.

Meanwhile, Cabrera (4-4, 3.48 ERA) is eligible for arbitration through 2028, and Finnegan (0-1, 4.50 ERA) is on an expiring contract. Cabrera pitches for the Miami Marlins, and Finnegan is with the Washington Nationals.
The Cubs rank 15th in baseball with a 3.90 ERA as of Sunday evening.
