Clyde Edwards-Helaire claimed that the New Orleans Saints' signing him will allow him to live out his dream.
Today marked the first padded practice for the New Orleans Saints.
Hopes were high that the offense might bounce back after last week’s defensive dominance, but once again, the defense stole the show.
There were a couple of bright spots for the offense, most notably a beautiful deep connection between Spencer Rattler and Rashid Shaheed. Another standout was Kendre Miller’s sharp one-cut run, which was one of the rare moments the offensive line truly held its ground.
On the defensive side, the secondary continued to shine. Even in the wake of Tyrann Mathieu's retirement, veteran Justin Reid has stepped up, and Julian Blackmon is making a name for himself with increased reps in the starting rotation.
Danny Stutsman and Bryan Breese have been menaces at practice, just dominating every single snap, and poor Trevor Penning has been taking the brunt of it. Penning, who made the transition from tackle to guard, has looked bullied out there next, getting beaten almost every time by seemingly anyone he comes up against, especially Breese.
While there is a video floating around of Kelvin Banks Jr planting Chris Rump II on his rump, it still doesn’t make up for the inability to protect any QBs getting first-team snaps.
Now, some may say that this is training camp and offenses are supposed to be struggling; that’s why they practice, but this could foretell a sign that this team offensively isn’t even close to ready.
That’s a scary sign when they are just a little over a week away from their first pre-season game with the Los Angeles Chargers.
After practice, I caught up with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and got to ask him if being in the black and gold had been what he thought it would feel like.
“Yeah probably more, I have been dreaming of wearing this jersey since I was a kid,” CEH said.
His enthusiasm was infectious and a highlight for fans.
It was a hot practice featuring a defense that was playing as hot as a late July day and an offense that seemed to be as cold as early January.
