Padres get bad news from MLB insider amid pursuit of All-Star MVP

The San Diego Padres get bad news from an MLB insider amid their pursuit of an All-Star MVP.

There's been one player that the San Diego Padres have been linked to all season in 2025. With the trade deadline just around the corner, the Padres' interest in this player is at an all-time high.

However, according to a report from MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Padres got some bad news on the availability of their top trade target, Boston Red Sox outfielder and All-Star Game MVP, Jarren Duran.

"The Boston Red Sox have no plans to trade outfielder Jarren Duran at the deadline," Nightengale writes, "rejecting the San Diego Padres' offers, and more likely to move him this winter."

While Duran could still be moved, it's not likely to happen at the trade deadline. For the Padres, who need to make moves at the trade deadline rather than the offseason, this update is a huge blow to their chances of bringing Duran in.

He'd cost a lot, and as Sean McAdam of Masslive.com reported, the Padres were already turned down once when they offered Dylan Cease, Ethan Salas, and another prospect for Duran.

Boston is in postseason contention and won't move Duran for a small return. While the Padres' offer isn't bad, Boston has expressed a desire to land a controllable starting pitcher for Duran. Cease, a free agent after 2025, doesn't fit the bill.

San Diego's chances of landing Duran weren't looking great, but this update from Nightengale shuts down nearly any possibility of the Red Sox outfielder making his way to the Padres, barring a complete surprise at the deadline.

While there are other interesting options, none matched the control (through 2028) and talent (8.7 WAR season in 2024) of Duran. But, after this update from Nightengale, the Padres and A.J. Preller will have to look elsewhere for their offensive addition.
