How many can you name, except the obvious ones?
When the joint history of Real Madrid and their next opponent in the UEFA Champions League, AS Monaco, is discussed, the big names like Kylian Mbappé, Fernando Morientes, James Rodriguez, and Aurelien Tchouameni come to mind. The two clubs have shared 12 players over the years. Some of those names may not appear in memory so easily.
Javier Saviola
Argentine forward, perhaps most famous for playing on the sides of El Clasico, was a Monaco player in 2004. He appeared in 36 games for the Ligue 1 side, scoring five times. Between 2007 and 2008, Saviola appeared in 23 games for Real Madrid, scoring four goals.
Ricardo Carvalho
Portuguese center-back Ricardo Carvalho spent the best years of his career at Porto, Chelsea, and Real Madrid. In 2013, he joined Monaco and appeared in 106 games for Monaco. Carvalho is a former UEFA Champions League winner with Porto, Premier League champion with Chelsea, and LaLiga champion with Real Madrid.
Emanuel Adebayor
Emanuel Adebayor has played for a long list of clubs. Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Real Madrid come to mind quicker than his brief spell at Monaco between 2003 and 2005. He appeared in 101 games and scored 22 goals for Monaco. He was part of Jose Mourinho’s Copa del Rey-winning side of 2011. His Real Madrid run, however, did not prolong beyond this loan spell.
Among other notable names who played for both clubs are former youth team player Fabinho, who did great things at Liverpool later on, and Mahmadou Diarra, an essential figure in the LaLiga triumph of 2007.
