Fabian Schar was taken to the hospital after suffering an ankle injury during Newcastle United’s ridiculous 4-3 win over Leeds United.
Schar was stretchered off in the second half following a tangle of legs with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The defender immediately gestured to the bench and required lengthy treatment before being withdrawn, raising immediate concern among Newcastle staff and players.
After the game, Eddie Howe admitted that the situation “doesn’t look good,” with Schar potentially missing ample time going forward.
Howe confirmed Schar had been taken to the hospital for further medical assessment.
“It doesn’t look good for Fabian,” Howe said. “He’s in hospital, I believe, at the moment. He’s got an ankle problem, so yeah, it doesn’t look good for him. We hope it’s not as serious as it looks.”
Howe expanded further in his post-match press conference, underlining both the uncertainty of the injury and Schar’s importance to the squad.
“We don’t know too much,” Howe said. “My thoughts are with him. He’s such an important player for us, he’s been incredible since we’ve come to the football club. He’s been almost an ever-present, he always puts his body on the line for the team and it looks like he’s picked up a bad injury unfortunately.”
The injury came on a night full of emotion and chaos at St James’ Park, as Newcastle scored twice in second-half stoppage time to overturn Leeds and secure the latest winning goal in a Premier League match since Opta records began in 2006-07.
Harvey Barnes scored twice, including the 102nd-minute winner, while Bruno Guimaraes converted a game-tying 91st-minute penalty.
Despite the euphoria at full-time, Schar’s injury cast a shadow over the victory. Newcastle are already dealing with defensive depth concerns, and any prolonged absence for the Swiss international would further stretch Eddie Howe’s options.
Newcastle’s next match is an FA Cup third-round tie at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, Jan. 10, with the Cherries coming off a 3-2 win over Tottenham on Wednesday.
