Welcome to the twelfth post in our twelve-part series reviewing each team’s signing class to date. These articles aim to provide a snapshot look at each team and lay out possible next steps once the transfer portal opens. Teams will be examined in alphabetical order. Today will look at the Cowboys.
The Road So Far:
Number who signed in December: 20
Number who will enroll early: 3
Number of states represented: 10
247 Composite Rankings (subject to change): 106th
MWCConnection December Ranking: 9th
Positional Strengths: Defensive back, Offensive Line
Notable signees: Colin Ford, Therman Williams
Overall thoughts:
The Cowboys struggled on the field for the 2025 season, and their recruiting class echoed that this cycle. Looking into the makeup of their class, there are some intriguing players they were able to sign. The main issue is that there just isn’t enough of them to make the class better. Still, for a program that prides itself on development, there is enough projection here to dream a bit.
Wyoming has long had success recruiting the Midwest and Plains states, and this year was no different, with players signed from Illinois, Nebraska, and Missouri. They also found recruits in more traditional MW states like California, Texas, Colorado, among others. Recruiting other states doesn’t automatically give them an advantage over other conference teams, but it is a potential edge to not have to compete with direct rivals in many states they recruit.
The Cowboys signed a decent-sized class, giving them a wave of young talent aimed at improving the roster in order to improve their play on the field. Now it’s up to the staff to develop them and see if a few players are ready to see the field as early as the 2026 season.
The Road Ahead:
Expected Level of Transfer Additions: High
Top Position Targets Remaining: Wide Receiver, Defensive Back
Overall thoughts:
The Cowboys routinely have a higher number of players than average enter the transfer portal, and thus far, this time around is no different. They will have plenty of work to do to inject more talent into their roster and available spots to do so. Unfortunately, the program often sees its best transfer leave again, so perhaps they will be targeting more seniors.
The skill positions on both sides of the ball are expected to be the main priorities for Wyoming. At the time of this writing, they have seen a significant number of wide receivers and defensive backs announce their intention to enter the portal. They will have to replace key starters at both positions, especially if they are trying to get their passing game going in 2o26.
The transfer era has impacted all programs, but a program like Wyoming has struggled more due to the level of in-state talent, location, and lack of recent success. That doesn’t mean they can’t succeed, but it does mean they have to work harder and think outside the box compared to other programs. The coaching staff seems to know this and it will be interesting to see who they target when the portal opens at the end of the week.
