The Dallas Cowboys have cut cornerback Trevon Diggs on the same day that his brother Stefon Diggs is accused of assaulting a woman.

The Cowboys made the announcement on Tuesday, Dec. 30 that they released Trevon, 27, with just one game left on the team's schedule this season. The cornerback will be eligible via the NFL waiver wire for the following 24 hours and becomes a free agent if he remains unclaimed.

The Cowboys play the New York Giants on the road on Sunday, Jan. 4.

One source told ESPN the decision to release Trevon was due to "a culmination of events, including performance."

In 2023, the Cowboys signed Diggs to a five-year, $97 million contract extension.

Trevon's dismissal in Dallas comes on the same day as his brother Stefon, 32, is accused of slapping and choking a woman at his Massachusetts home on the night of Dec. 2, according to a copy of a police report obtained by PEOPLE. There is no indication that the decision to release Trevon is related to the accusations against his brother.

The disagreement allegedly began over a financial dispute, the woman told police while first reporting the incident on Dec. 16, noting that she had been working for Diggs until the night of the alleged incident, when she said she quit her job.

She initially declined to press charges against the NFL player and boyfriend of Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B, but she notified police on Dec. 23 that she had changed her mind and wanted to pursue pressing charges.

Stefon is now due to appear in Dedham District Court on Jan. 23 — two days before the Patriots would play in the AFC Championship game should they get there — to be arraigned on the charges.

Stefon's attorney David Meier told PEOPLE that his client "categorically denies the allegations," on Dec. 30. "They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur."

"The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: they are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee's satisfaction," Meier added.
