Quentin Johnston can't be this bad... can he?
The Los Angeles Chargers are cruising through training camp in preparation for the first preseason game, which takes place next Thursday night in Canton, Ohio, for the Hall of Fame Game.
One spot where the team really needs players to step up is at wide receiver. Ladd McConkey is entrenched as the team's No. 1 target after a tremendous rookie season. Fifth-round pick KeAndre-Lambert Smith seems to have gotten the message. But Quentin Johnston is still Quentin Johnston, unfortunately.
Though Johnston did catch eight touchdown passes last year, they were largely overshadowed by his mishaps, mostly some key drops in costly moments. Following the retirement of Mike Williams, the team is going to need to count on Johnston this season, which really is a make-or-break year for him.
So what happens when he has a bad case of the drops again? That almost seems inevitable when you watch this guy play. Here's a clip for Wednesday's practice session:

Just a flat-out drop. Wide open in the middle of the field, and he puts it on the ground. That doesn't exactly bring confidence that he'll reel it in when it's third-and-long on the road in a hostile environment and the team needs a first down to stay alive.

Was the sun in his eyes? Did he try to run before he had a hold of it? These are excuses that you can make when this is a rare occurrence, but with Johnston, it's not.
It could be in his head at this point, but it's something that absolutely has to get better or he's nothing more than a marginal option for this team, which is not good when you're a former first-round pick entering your third year in the league.
