ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – High school holiday basketball rolled on with another thrilling day of tournament action.
The Josh Palmer Fund Holiday Classic returned to Elmira High School for another big day of games, on Sunday. High school boys hoops dominated the day with 7 total games. Among the top highlights, homestanding Elmira fell to a tough St. Andrew’s Episcopal team out of Maryland, and Corning secured a championship meeting with Waverly.
The Express were defeated 66-38 in the final contest of the night, despite plenty of highlights. Darien “Baby” Harris guided Elmira’s offense with a halftime buzzer beater, backed by big plays from Julian Colon and Zach Conklin. Conklin scored 13 points with 8 rebounds in the effort.
The Lions’ skilled offense was anchored by 6’10 senior Siefeng “Steve” Huan, who scored a game-high 20 points, and has NCAA Division I offers from Maryland, UCF, LIU, Samford, and Wichita State. As a result, St. Andrew’s advances to Monday’s National Division semifinal against St. Mary’s, at 8:30 p.m. Elmira will meet Mechanicsburg at 1:30 pm. in the 5th place semis.
In the Boys Regional Division 2, the Hawks rolled past North Penn-Mansfield 84-42 to secure a title game spot. Standout sophomore Nolyn Proudfoot paced Corning with 22 points, while Kyler Stevenson tacked on 16, and Carter Proudfoot added 14. In the other semifinal, Waverly outlasted Elmira Notre Dame 67-57, behind 29 points from Hogan Shaw. The Wolverines will meet the Hawks, this Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the Regional Division 2 crown.
In the lone girl’s consolation, Corning also earned a big victory. Charlise Starns delivered a 2nd-straight double-double to lead the Hawks past Edison. The 34 point, 12 rebound performance pushed Corning to the 57-30 victory.

In Watkins Glen, the Lake Hawks earned a thrilling win for the Melissa B. Wilson Tournament title. The homestanding ladies held off a late charge from Pal-Mac to win 37-34. In the final 1:30, Watkins Glen fought off the Red Raiders with a three pointer from Emma Cady. Pal-Mac responded with a game-tying bucket, before Rachel Vickio secured the victory with another triple. Vickio earned tournament MVP honors with her 8 point effort, while Olivia King led the Lake Hawks with 10 points.
