Browns add defender from Super Bowl champion to fill spot after surprise retirement

Cleveland needed to make a move.

The Cleveland Browns had an unexpectedly open roster spot.

Last week, defensive end Elerson Smith retired in a surprise at age 27.

On Wednesday, the Browns filled the opening. They claimed defensive end K.J. Henry off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles, according to The Athletic's Zac Jackson.

Ironically, the Eagles only waived Henry because they just signed Ogbo Okoronkwo, who the Browns recently got rid of.

Henry was a part of the Eagles' practice squad last season just beginning in late January. So he was there preparing for the Super Bowl that Philadelphia won, but he didn't play in the game.

Henry split last season between the Cowboys and Bengals, and he got into two regular season games with each team.

The year before, Henry played 10 games for Washington, starting three.

In 14 career NFL games, Henry has 2.5 sacks and 22 tackles.

Henry was a fifth-round pick by the Commanders in 2023 out of Clemson.

At 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, Henry might be a tad light by NFL defensive end standards, but he works hard and has found a way to stick around in the league.

The Browns may not need Henry in the long run, but he's a good player to take a look at in case depth is needed down the road.
