After a long career on the sidelines, in the press box, and locker rooms, Sarasota Herald-Tribune sports writer and columnist Doug Fernandes has put away his pen and notebook.

Fernandes ended his 37-year career working in Sarasota by retiring on July 1.

Over the years, Fernandes, a Massachusetts transplant, covered many of sports' biggest events, including 13 Super Bowls, the Lightning in the Stanley Cup Finals, Shaquille O'Neal playing for the Orlando Magic, and the Tampa Bay Rays playing their first game in program history.

On the local front, he's covered many of the top moments over the past four decades in Sarasota and Manatee County history, including football powerhouses at Manatee, Southeast, and Venice. He's also been a regular at the annual Dick Vitale Gala, which raises money for the V Foundation.

Fernandes plans to remain in the Sarasota area now that his playing career is over and may still hit the sidelines at times as a freelance reporter for the Herald-Tribune.
