The 2024-25 school year is in the books and the greater Milwaukee area was again treated to some stellar performances across all sports.
During the Milwaukee High School Sports Awards, Divine Savior Holy Angels was named the girls team of the year after becoming the first girls volleyball program in WIAA history to win three straight Division 1 state championships.
But we want to hear from you. Who do you think was the 2024-25 high school girls team of the year from around the area? Each of the 10 nominees listed won state titles in their respective sports this past school year.

Arrowhead girls track and field
The Warhawks went back-to-back this past spring by winning their second consecutive WIAA Division 1 state girls track and field title. Arrowhead became the first D1 program in eight years to win back-to-back state titles. Junior stars Avery Bott and Elise Schroeder helped capture 34 of the 61 total points for the champions with Bott winning the 200-meter state title and Schroeder defending her pole vault title.
Brookfield Academy girls tennis
After years of the boys tennis program dominating in Division 2, it was the girls program’s turn in the spotlight this past fall. The Blue Knights won their first WIAA state girls team tennis title by defeating Aquinas 4-3 in the championship match. All three doubles pairings won in the final, while girls player of the year Kylie Matz completed her week-long triumph of titles after winning the D2 individual title with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
Catholic Memorial girls soccer
After a six-year absence, Catholic Memorial girls soccer regained its throne after a 4-2 victory over Edgewood in the Division 3 state title match. The title marked the 12th WIAA state girls soccer championship in program history to extend the Crusaders' own record. Claire Weber played a part in all four goals for the Crusaders with a goal and three assists, while defender Julia Rothermel scored half of her season goal total (4) in a span of just over three minutes in the second half for a two-goal lead.
Catholic Memorial girls volleyball
Speaking of the Crusaders, CMH also brought home a gold ball during the fall season with a few of its soccer athletes. Lucia Brown and Jenna Welsch assisted in helping the Crusaders win the Division 2 state title with a dominant straight-set victory over Luxemburg-Casco. The title marked the eighth WIAA championship in program history. Welsch led CMH with 11 kills and seven digs, while Brown had eight kills, 11 digs and 15 assists.
Divine Savior Holy Angels girls golf
The first of two nominees for the Dashers came on the links this past fall as DSHA steamrolled its way to back-to-back WIAA Division 1 girls golf state titles. The Dashers won the title by 29 strokes over Prescott with four of their players in the lineup finishing inside the top 20 finishers on the individual leaderboard. Zoe Gryniewicz was the highest finisher for DSHA in fifth (77-77-154). Ava Roesch finished seventh with a two-day score of 157, while Addy Roesch finished tied for 15th with a 161. Julia Krueger finished 20th with a 165. The title marked the fifth straight year a Milwaukee-area program won the D1 title following Brookfield Central in 2020, and Westosha Central in 2021 and 2022 prior to DSHA’s run.
Divine Savior Holy Angels girls volleyball
The second nominee from DSHA comes from the back-to-back-to-back WIAA Division 1 state girls volleyball champions. The Dashers completed a 47-1 campaign this past fall, defeating Greater Metro Conference rival Sussex Hamilton in the title match to win their third straight state title. The title marked the first time since the WIAA moved to a four-division tournament format in 1990 that a D1 team won three straight titles. The Dashers were also named the girls team of the year at June’s High School Sports Awards show in downtown Milwaukee, while outside hitter Madison Quest was named girls volleyball player of the year.
Muskego girls soccer
The Warriors dynasty continued this spring. For the fourth straight season, Muskego girls soccer won the WIAA Division 1 state girls soccer championship. The Warriors became the third program to win four state titles in a row, all of which are from the Milwaukee area (Brookfield Central and Catholic Memorial). It took two extra-time periods and a penalty shootout, but the Warriors survived an awesome matchup with Madison West in the state title match to win a fourth straight title led by Jess Fernau, Klara Muench and Savannah Mittelstaedt.
University School of Milwaukee cross-country
For the first time in program history, the University School of Milwaukee girls cross-country program won a WIAA Division 2 state title. The Wildcats, led by JS girls runner of the year Bella Grenier, totaled 60 points at the state meet with three top-seven finishers in Grenier, Annie Norman and Cate Kohli. Grenier also won the D2 3,200-meter state title on the track in spring, while Norman finished third behind Grenier in the 1,600-meter final.
Wauwatosa East girls basketball
The 44-year state title drought ended for Wauwatosa East girls basketball this past March. The Red Raiders survived the first triple-overtime state tournament game in WIAA history against Edgewood in the Division 2 state title game to capture a gold ball. Division-I prospect and JS girls basketball player of the year Mikaia Litza led all scorers with 32 points in the title game, while the Red Raiders steamrolled their way to a 29-1 mark on the season with a co-Greater Metro Conference championship included in its magical season.
Whitefish Bay girls swimming and diving
The Blue Dukes captured their first WIAA Division 2 state swim and dive state title this past fall with a dominant 360-point display, winning the gold by 90 points over runner-up Edgewood. Junior star and JS girls swim and dive athlete of the year Anne Dickinson won every event she competed in, including individual titles in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle. She was the leadoff leg for a title-winning 400-yard freestyle relay team and anchored another win in the 200 freestyle relay to round out her efforts.
