Right-handed starting pitcher Hunter Greene is in his fourth MLB season with Cincinnati Reds.
The 25-year-old ace was selected second overall in the 2017 MLB draft and made his debut on the big-league roster in 2022.
Greene struggled to find consistency over his first two full seasons but broke out in 2024 making his first All-Star Game and finishing eighth in NL Cy Young voting. Over 26 starts, he pitched to a 9-5 record, 2.75 ERA and 169 strikeouts.
The right-hander has continued his dominant stretch during the 2025 season but struggled to stay healthy in the first half of the season.
Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 4 due to a right groin strain. This marked his second stint on the IL for the same injury this season, having also missed time from May 8–22 with the same groin strain.
He was set to begin a rehab assignment in early July, but tightness in the groin area forced a postponement, further delaying his return to the active roster.
On Friday, manager Terry Francona officially announced Greene is on track to finally start his rehab assignment early next week.

Greene has sustained the high standard he established in 2024 when healthy this season, posting a 2.72 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 11 starts while compiling a 4–3 record.
As the Reds enter the second half at 50–47—just 2.5 games out of the third wild-card spot—Greene’s return as the team’s ace will be pivotal for their strong postseason aspirations.
