The Philadelphia 76ers remain in contract negotiations with restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, who is coming off a breakout season.
The 25-year-old began the 2024-25 season with the Dallas Mavericks before being traded to Philadelphia ahead of the deadline in February. He averaged an impressive 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals across 33.6 minutes per game in 28 regular-season appearances with Philadelphia.
However, the team was without several players for much of that stretch, including Joel Embiid, Paul George, Jared McCain and Kyle Lowry. With the 76ers hoping to return to full health in 2025-26, Grimes’ role will likely look much different.
Quentin Grimes could become a trade candidate
Nicolas Kyle Pring of The Sixer Sense believes Philadelphia should work out a deal with the 25-year-old, as the team could eventually flip him for more assets.
"Fortunately, as long as the 76ers showcase him well, they should have zero problems finding a taker for Grimes,” he wrote. “He is a good all-around guard who can fill in different roles, and is only entering his prime. For the right price, Philly should welcome the opportunity to cash in on their gem from last season.”
With the Sixers landing the No. 3 overall pick and selecting V.J. Edgecombe out of Baylor, the team has a wealth of backcourt options. McCain is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season after suffering a torn meniscus last December, leaving Grimes in a competition for playing time alongside the two young guards.
The 76ers could re-sign Grimes and later trade him, as they'll likely focus on developing McCain and Edgecombe alongside Tyrese Maxey.
Grimes could still accept the 76ers’ $8.7 million qualifying offer and play out the 2025-26 season, though it would make more sense for Philadelphia to sign him and potentially use him as a trade chip.
