A historic night in Lawrence as Kansas celebrates its revamped home with a statement win.
The first step out of the tunnel said it all. For the first time in program history, Kansas football players poured onto the field through a true tunnel walk, greeted by a striped-out crowd of 41,525 inside the newly remodeled David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The night wasn’t just about the sparkling venue, it was about proving the Jayhawks belong on the national stage.
Quarterback Jalon Daniels made sure that message came through.
Daniels looked poised and electric, completing 12 of his first 13 passes while leading the team in rushing before halftime. His precision sparked an offense that didn’t hesitate to attack under new coordinator Jim Zebrowski. Wideout Cam Pickett hauled in two touchdown catches, while Daniel Hishaw and Leshon Williams combined for 126 yards on the ground.
The moment wasn’t lost on Daniels, who called it his “last first game.” He paused on the field during breaks, soaking in the roar, the lights, and the sight of fans who packed every section.
Kansas’ defense also rose to the occasion. Linebacker Bangally Kamara’s strip-sack, confirmed after a thunderous fan-driven replay review, became the loudest highlight of the night, sealing momentum in the 31-7 win over Fresno State.
Coach Lance Leipold summed it up best: “It was our responsibility to hold up our end on a special night like this.”
For Kansas, this was more than a victory. It was proof of what’s possible in their new home.
