The contract dispute between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys has now dragged to within two weeks of the regular season beginning. Still, progress remains incredibly slow toward reaching an agreement.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero had the latest on the contract dispute. He explained that even though the season is rapidly approaching, there have been no further negotiations between the two sides.

“We are two weeks away from tonight from the kickoff game between the Eagles and the Cowboys,” Tom Pelissero said. “As you mentioned, Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that he is confident Micah Parsons will be out there. However, from my understanding, there is still no movement in terms of a contract extension that is expected to make Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. There is still no communication between the Cowboys and Parsons’ agent about trying to get a deal done.”

Earlier this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers gave a contract extension to star edge rusher TJ Watt. That’s a three-year, $123 million contract that includes $108 million fully guaranteed at signing. There’s an expectation that, with Micah Parsons being younger, he’d earn more in his next contract. On top of that, while Jerry Jones has experience negotiating contracts, this is unique from other recent deals.

“So, a couple of points here. The Cowboys, of course, have a history of getting these deals done late. CeeDee Lamb was right around this time last year. Dak Prescott went all the way down to the day of the opener last year in Cleveland,” Pelissero said. “But on the flip side of that, there were longstanding, months of negotiations that went into those deals. With Parsons, there’s really been no talks whatsoever since Jerry and Micah spoke face to face way back in March. To Jerry Jones, based on his thinking, he thought that they had a deal in place.”

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is confident that he’ll be on the field with or without an extension, but there are hurdles to clear. In particular, because he hasn’t been practicing, he probably isn’t in game shape.

“There is still time for things to move forward here, but Parsons has not practiced at all. He’s been in meetings, he’s been in walkthroughs. He’s been engaged from everything that I’ve been told in those,” Pelissero said. “But there’s still a conditioning piece to this to play a game. That needs to happen quickly here. There has been open dialogue between Brian Schottenheimer and Micah Parsons. We’ll see exactly how this thing moves forward.”

Jerry Jones reveals latest holdup in discussions with Dallas Cowboys star

On Thursday morning, Jerry Jones appeared on Fox News. There, he shared what he feels the holdup is in the negotiations with Micah Parsons.

“Micah’s a great player. Not a good player, but a great player. He knows more than anyone that it’s a team thing. So, I know everybody’s tired of hearing this, but you’ve got to put this puzzle together so that you can have some other people out there playing with Micah. That’s the art of the deal and that’s what we’re trying to get done,” Jones said.

“We’re trying to make this thing work. We have all the appreciation in the world for what he can mean to the years ahead. We’re proud to have him.”
