Cal is expected to name true freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele its starter for Week 1 at Oregon State, sources tell On3. Sagapolutele, who transferred to Cal shortly after enrolling at Oregon, beat out Ohio State transfer Devin Brown for the starting job.
Sagapolutele was committed to Cal for much of his high school recruitment before flipping to the Ducks in December. But after being at Oregon for Rose Bowl Game practices, he opted to leave the Ducks and soon after committed to Cal.
A five-star recruit and top-20 prospect in the 2025 class according to On3, Sagapolutele did enough through spring ball and training camp to edge out Brown for the starting job.
“Jaron, he’s special as a freshman, he really is,” Cal general manager Ron Rivera recently said. “He throws off platform as well as a lot of people I’ve seen in the NFL. Has the ability to change his arm angles. He can drop his elbow and flick it out there, and at the same time, stand tall and bring it over the top. There’s a special ability to him.”
The 6-foot-2.5, 220-pound left-handed quarterback saw his recruiting stock skyrocket in his final season of high school at James Campbell (Ewa Beach, Hawaii). An Elite 11 finalist, his 10,653 career passing yards are the most in Hawaii state history, beating Dillon Gabriel’s 9,848. He’s also second in Hawaii state history with 114 touchdowns. The Ewa Beach (Hawaii) James Campbell product threw for 3,404 yards as a senior with a 46-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
