Almost heaven as they say over in the Mountain State, but one thing folks in West Virginia do adore is their high school football.

The 2025 season begins along the country roads starting on Aug. 25 and will culminate in mid-December in Charleston with the WVSSAC state championships. We went ahead and predicted the four state champions for the upcoming season.

Class AAAA: Martinsburg

Until the someone unseats the 11-time state champions of Class AAAA, the Bulldogs are not going anywhere in our books. Martinsburg winning a 12th state championship is something we have already made a prediction on for this upcoming 2025 season, as they bring back a strong group despite graduating all-world quarterback Koi Fagan, who is now at Marshall. Taking over the controls of the Martinsburg offense is first-year starter Brian Dick, who saw time under center last year for the Bulldogs. Dick rushed for 776 yards and scored 12 times. Spring Mills will give Martinsburg a run for their money as always, but we’ev got the Bulldogs coming out on top.

Class AAA: Nitro

We know we’re going to rile some West Virginia high school football fans with this one, but how do you not consider this Wildcats team to be a state championship contending program at this point? Nitro is coming off their first playoff victory since 2007 and that’s left the program hungry for more. Well, with the talent coming back, there’s no mistake in wanting to have it all. The Wildcats are one of a very few teams in West Virginia that can boast having two Power 4 commitments on their team, as Nitro features West Virginia Mountaineer commit Malachi Thompson and Florida State pledge Da’Ron Parks. Having both players on the team has greatly risen the expectations from fringe playoff team to state title contending.

Class AA: Frankfort

The Falcons won last year’s AA with ease in a 49-14 rout of Roane County, as they capped their seventh straight playoff appearance as a program. Now the biggest question marks for the team is how do they fill the voids left behind by a very talented senior class. Frankfort has several starters coming back from the state-title winning group, including senior running back Carder Shanholtz, who rushed for 1,201 yards and scored 18 touchdowns last season. Though there will be plenty of teams chomping at the bit hoping that there’s some type of drop of for the Falcons, we have Frankfort returning to the top of the proverbial mountain come the late fall.

Class A: Wahama

We have three teams in West Virginia repeating as state champions and the Falcons are the final ones on our list heading into the 2025 campaign. For a Wahama team that never lacks for scoring, averaging a staggering 54 points per game last year, the Falcons return with the bulk of the offense coming back. That’s bad news for opposing defenses looking to slow them down. Wahama’s ground attack is where they lived at mostly, with the Falcons totaling 5,118 yards and 86 touchdowns in 2024. With players like quarterback Trace Simpkins returning under center after a sophomore season where he threw and ran for over 1,000 yards, Wahama is staring firmly at winning a third state title this fall in Charleston.
