The Brooklyn Nets will most likely be headed towards a 2025-26 NBA season that results in plenty of losses. Who will be taking the last shot?
The Brooklyn Nets are in the middle of a 2025 NBA offseason in which they are looking to improve the roster following a disappointing 26-56 record after last season. Brooklyn is still keeping the rebuild as the main area that the franchise is concerned with, but they have some players on the roster that could make some noise next season in big moments.
The Nets are expected to be one of the worst teams in the league next season due to the fact that the team selected five players in the 2025 NBA Draft and did not add much to the team in free-agency. Brooklyn did trade for forwards Michael Porter Jr. and Terance Mann along with re-signing forward Ziaire Williams and center Day'Ron Sharpe to solid contracts.
Be that as it may, the Nets still have 82 games that they have to play next season and they will need someone, or possibly multiple players, to fill the role of the guy that can take and make the last shot (h/t to Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz). There are a few guys on the roster who can fill the role based of what they have done in their respective careers so here are the few that stand out for this role among the rest:
Cam Thomas
Thomas, 23, is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. He was the team's leading scorer last season and assuming that he re-signs with the only team that he has known in his NBA career, he should stand a great chance of being the go-to option for head coach Jordi Fernandez.
Michael Porter Jr.
Porter comes to Brooklyn after spending his first seven seasons with the Denver Nuggets, but it seems that he is excited for the opportunity due to how he feels that his game plateaued in Denver. Porter is used to playing third fiddle to Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, but time will tell if he has to do something similar with the Nets given that he averages 16.2 points on 50.0% field-goal shooting for his career.
Egor Demin
Demin is going to be a rookie this upcoming season and he will most likely be playing behind Thomas and Porter within the offensive hierarchy at the very least. Center Nic Claxton is also a player that Fernandez has learned to trust with the ball in his hands, but Demin could be developing as the point guard of the future. Part of that development would most likely involved being put into some high-pressure situations along the way.
