South African sensation Shandre Campbell scored a last-minute stunner as Belgian giants Club Brugge secured a narrow 1-0 win over SV Zulte Waregem in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday evening.
With his maiden goal for the senior team, the 20-year-old winger joined a long list of South African players who have scored in the Belgian topflight division, including Bafana Bafana internationals Lyle Foster and Percy Tau.
Campbell earned promotion to the first team in February and made his debut in the same month, after impressing in the reserve league with Club NXT, Brugge’s academy in the second division of Belgian football.
The SuperSport United academy graduate, who joined the 19-time Belgian champions in July 2024 on a three-year deal that will run until June 2027, scored nine goals and provided two assists for Club NXT last season.
Furthermore, the South African under-20 international was included in Brugge’s UEFA Champions League squad for the two-legged clash against English Premier League side Aston Villa in the round of 16 back in March.
Campbell’s stay with Brugge is proving to be trophy laden as he lifted his first trophy with the club in the form of the Crocky Cup, the Belgian FA Cup, at the back end of last season. He added to his trophy cabinet with the Belgian Super Cup at the beginning of the ongoing 2025/26 campaign.
Meanwhile, the player’s goal proved to be crucial as the Belgian giants closed the gap on log leaders Union Saint- Gilloise. Brugge have accumulated nine points after four matches played and trail the table toppers with a single point.
Now, Nicky Hayen’s men will turn their focus to the Champions League, where they are set to lock horns with Scottish juggernauts Rangers FC in the first leg of the qualifying round at Ibrox Stadium on Tuesday.
