Caleb Williams is already running into some trouble.

To their credit, Chicago Bears fans were willing to give young quarterback Caleb Williams a pass throughout his rookie season, typically partially blaming his struggles on the offensive line and then-head coach Matt Eberflus.

The grace period appears over, at least if social media are any indication. Bears reporters attending Wednesday’s practice shared that Williams threw an interception to begin 1-on-1 drills, news that infuriated an already anxious fan base.

Williams also botched a pitch to running back D’Andre Swift, a play that reporters said would have been an easy defensive touchdown.

“I’m not overreacting to training camp, but I am slightly concerned with Caleb,” one X/Twitter user wrote. “His tape from last year is ugly, and it feels like I’m seeing alot of bad from Caleb in camp.”

Added another: “Caleb Williams is a [expletive] bum and always will be a bum. Bears need a new qb already.”

Bears Fans Are Losing Patience With Caleb Williams

Williams flashed throughout his rookie year, completing 62.5% of his passes for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. However, he was sacked a league-high 68 times, and his 6.3 yards per attempt ranked fifth-worst among qualified passers.

Williams was the only quarterback who started all 17 games to average fewer than 6.7 yards per pass.

“Caleb Williams has been a walking red flag since his last year in college,” an X user commented. “He needs to earn respect and the way he played last year was garbage with what he had compared to the rest of the rookie QBs in the league.”

Bears coach Ben Johnson confirmed Wednesday that Williams and the Bears’ other starters will play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night in the second week of the preseason. It is unclear how long Chicago will play its first-team offense, though.

“If they do bad we will hear, ‘CW is bust and the coach doesn’t know what he’s doing,’" one Bears fan argued, “and if they do good, the Chicago media will still find a way to [expletive] and moan.”

Williams and the Bears open the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, Sept. 8.
