Shohei Ohtani hit into a triple play and homered in a loss to the Angels.
Dave Roberts Had Shohei Ohtani Message After Dodgers’ Third Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Los Angeles Dodgers' NL West lead is no more. With their 7-6 loss in 10 innings to the Los Angeles Angels, the San Diego Padres matched their 68-52 record. San Diego's four-game winning streak allowed them to take advantage of the Dodgers' third straight loss.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was less than pleased as a triple play stole the show in Los Angeles. Shohei Ohtani may have homered in the ninth inning, but his sixth-inning triple play garnered all the attention.
Speaking with reporters postgame, Roberts said it was the runner on first base, Dalton Rushing, who needed to get back in that situation. Roberts also addressed Ohtani's late-game homer.
"It was great," Roberts said in regard to Ohtani's go-ahead homer. "I think the at-bat quality, the fight, big hit right there. Obviously you felt it in the dugout."
While Ohtani's 43rd home run of the season put the Dodgers on top, 6-5, it wasn't enough.
"The next inning they get a leadoff runner on base and then the inning builds and you're holding on, trying to find a way to extend the game," Roberts added (via Michael J. Duarte).

Ben Casparius took the loss, fell to 7-5 as it was his first loss since July 22. The Dodgers have now dropped three in a row as they have one more game in Anaheim to salvage the series.
Roberts club jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They wouldn't lead again until Ohtani's homer in the ninth, but came up empty in the top of the 10th, which led to Casparius allowing a bunt and walk-off single.
Ohtani has now homered in four straight games. All four of those home runs have been solo shots. Dating back to August 6, he has five homers and six RBIs. A long ball in the series finale will match Ohtani's longest home run streak of the season, which spanned from July 19-23.

Shohei Ohtani Made MLB History Against Angels
According to MLB.com's Sonja Chen, it was another history making game for the 31-year-old. Since 1961, Ohtani is only the third player to hit into a triple play and hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning (or later) in the same game.
The Dodgers three game losing streak is their longest since they were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers to open the second-half of the season. Los Angeles is looking to avoid disaster similar to the seven-game skid they had from July 4-11.
Game three of the Angels series is the Dodgers last chance to get any momentum heading into a crucial three-game showdown with the Padres. Los Angeles has two series against San Diego in its next three series.
