This is new.
Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald announced as playing a new position in surprise decision vs. Padres originally appeared on The Sporting News
The San Francisco Giants have given Tyler Fitzgerald a new task Tuesday night:
Play right field.
Fitzgerald has not played a single inning of his MLB career with the number '9' next to his name in the scorebook, but apparently there's a first time for everything.
The Giants have been trying to figure out right field since trading away their everyday guy out there, Mike Yastrzemski, at the trade deadline.
Fitzgerald has played 17 MLB games in centerfield and four in left field, but this is new. He had been playing right field at Triple-A Sacramento to prepare for this.
Considering that he's even pitched before, the only position left for Fitzgerald to play in the majors is catcher.

This has been a brutal season for Fitzgerald.
In 2024, he was called up midway through the campaign and went on to hit .280 with 19 doubles, 15 homers and 17 steals.
But this time around, he's batting just .227 in 63 games with three home runs.

He has mostly been played out of the infield by Casey Schmitt, who is batting second and playing second on Tuesday night vs. the Padres.
All Fitzgerald can do now is try to prove himself versatile and maybe wake his bat up a little bit to see if he can prove he still belongs in San Francisco's long-term plans, even if it is in a brand new spot.
